A major plot element of the Deviant Universe was an annual (and occasionally semi-annual) event known as the "Genocide Wave." OOCly, the Wave was nothing more than a mechanic to 'sweep' inactive characters and artists from the group annually, similar to an app/drop cycle of sorts. An energy wave washed over Earth at the end of every Summer Cycle (which held the annual 3-month 3-parter story events), and inactive characters that didn't meet annual activity requirements were swept away by the Wave.
As the story progressed, it was revealed that the "Wave" had an actual in-world explanation that would persist so long as the heroes' story continued, and which largely ended some unspecified years after the events of "World's End," which concluded the Deviant Universe as a collective project.
Sigma, who is the DU's equivalent of Eternity or the Monitor (a near omnipotent entity tasked with observing and preserving the integrity of the multiverse), is vulnerable and weakening. Their grasp over reality is slipping, resulting in multiversal events and their kidnapping and near death in the event "Nexus Sigma," followed by their true and final death at the end of World's End.
When World's End occurs, Sigma is slain by the thrice-returned galactic warlord Psi-Void, who is unable to take control over her powers. One of the heroes of the multiverse, a time/space manipulator called Vigil, takes hold of Sigma's power and ascends to her position of power, sealing Psi-Void in a limbo solely devoted to his imprisonment for all eternity (but it's a comic book world, so we all know how THAT probably goes in a few decades when ratings are low.). Vigil is initially unable to completely stop the Wave, but it is clear that she is gradually gaining control over the phenomenon and with time the stability of their multiverse will be re-achieved (at some point after the conclusion of any writing where inactivity leads to the sweeping of characters.).
