CHARACTER
CHARACTER NAME: Tess Donaldson
CANON: Original Character - “The Deviant Universe,” a shared canon by artists in the superhero genre on Deviantart.
AU WORKSHOP LINK: N/A
AGE/AU AGE: AU Age 16
HERO/VILLAIN ALIAS: Thresher
OCCUPATION: Student
PERSONALITY:
-Gruff on the exterior, with a tendency to be a little blunt, she is nevertheless a good natured person once someone gets past the occasionally rough outer shell. She is self-conscious about people's initial reactions to her appearance, but as soon as they seem pleasant she eases up and warms to them, preferring to be on good terms rather than bad.
-Hard worker, and a firm believer in the value of a good, honest day's work. Was brought up by her adoptive parents to know that if you want anything good in life, you need to earn your keep to achieve it.
-Has a fairly dry sense of humor, though it tends to be more self-effacing or taking amusement at the difficulties that she faces than at other's expense.
-Reasonably easy to get to know, her life is what she considers an open book, and there are very few things that she is unwilling to speak about, though she doesn't tend to push her past on others. She prefers to think of herself as nothing special. Even her biological father isn't a topic that she considers 'taboo,' though she doesn't really like talking about him.
-Does not get along well with animals, which is probably because of the predator in her system, and finds that she's usually more comfortable away from them, as they see her as a threat and growl, hiss or bark accordingly.
-An obligate carnivore, she likes her food as close to raw as she can get it, and as a result doesn't really like eating with others. She knows that it makes folks uncomfortable to see her eat something that's pretty damned close to tartar. Loves sashimi.
-Is a physical person with physical hobbies, be they sports, working out, hiking, swimming or the like. She isn't an avid reader, though she isn't a slouch in her academic studies. She just doesn't read or do mental pursuits nearly as much as she does physical.
-Has an active hero complex, and wants to help others who are less fortunate, or who are in danger. For lack of a better word, she has been raised with a firm belief in “With great power comes great responsibility,” and views her mutation as a gift that is meant to be used for others.
-Is really self-conscious about her appearance and her size, being that she is about 4'10”, and looks up to everyone (shorter even than someone like Tsuyu by an inch.), and if teased about it usually is prone to going to a pretty significant extent to prove her skills. Can be a bit of an over-achiever when it comes to this sort of thing.
-Really loves the ocean, swimming and anything related to the water, having spent all her life along the sea.
-Not an especially religious person by nature, she gets bored in philosophical or political debate and generally prefers to avoid the subject.
-Aromantic and asexual, Tess is uninterested in romance in general and in no hurry to change this. She has a very low libido, and doesn't generally find most people attractive at all.
-Speaks Japanese conversationally after years of study in preparation to come to the academy, but isn't especially good at hiding a southerner's accent when she speaks.
HISTORY:
-Born the daughter of a Navy man named Rocco McDonald who once went by the Hero name of "Poseidon," and a Nurse named Sally Elwood, Tess' father left when her mother was still pregnant, returning to the sea. The pregnancy was a difficult one, and her mother died due to complications in the midst of labor. As she had no living relatives, the baby was put into the foster care program and adopted by the Donaldson family in South Carolina.
-Her relationship to Michael and Amber Donaldson was a loving one, the hard-working workers of a local lighthouse having instilled a strong work ethic in their adopted child from an early age. Seeing that her mutation came with a quirk that could potentially help and protect others, they were supportive of her decision to become a hero and helped her in the process to get into the prestigious AU program as an exchange student to Japan.
-Her life in South Carolina was close to idyllic, the local community being familiar with quirks and having quite a few mutation-bearing children in their midst. Though she was teased for her shark-like appearance and in particular for her height, in general most of the locals seemed to think well of Tess. She formed numerous easy friendships, preferring the company of fellow mutants over those who were more human in appearance, gathering for youthful hijinks that thankfully never quite got her into too much trouble.
-Early on in her life, Tess saw footage of All Might and others like him, and took on a hero worship of Heroes, seeing them as wonderful people. Given the nature of her powers, she frequently went out to see as a young woman to try and help anyone who might have been having trouble at sea. Her parents worried about the risk, but regardless could not stop her from doing it, and so tried to be supportive and cautious, seeing in her a spirit that craved the chance to live for the sake of others.
-Tragedy struck the Donaldson family in the months before she took flight to Japan. A nasty bout of the flu ran through her community, killing several people. Among the dead were her adopted parents, though a distant cousin of the family was able to secure her transfer to Japan and help her to settle in. The aftermath of their death was a difficult thing, and she is still recovering from it to some extent, but she swore to do well in the prestigious high school and make them proud.
-She has met her biological father, who tracked her down years after her birth, wanting to form a bond with her shortly before she came to the academy. Tess, however, was having none of it, her adopted parents' death still too fresh in her mind and Rocco's apparent alcoholism not doing any favors to his attempt to reconcile with a daughter he'd never known. The hero Poseidon had become a washed up hack of what he had once been, and to her, the Donaldsons were her parents, and she had no time for his story.
QUIRK:
Mutation - Shark Powers
-Enhanced Strength: Her strength is augmented on both land and underwater, compact and built like a small but powerful mako shark. Similar to heroes like Gang Orca, her strength is augmented and considerable (while still developing as she trains), but its upper limit is nowhere near that of figures such as Mt Lady)
-Enhanced Durability: Both in terms of endurance and physical durability, her shark-like skin is capable of enduring blows that a normal human could not. Not precisely bullet-proof, it is nevertheless much tougher than the average person.
-Shark Teeth: Her bite is incredibly powerful and her teeth are capable of causing considerable harm, biting through whatever she can get her hands on, if she chooses to.
-Incredible Swimming: She is able to swim at speeds keeping pace with a Mako shark in the water, and has gills that enable her to breathe underwater.
-Hydrokinesis (Manipulation): Tess is not capable of creating water, but is able to manipulate a quantity that she is within arm's reach of. This ability's function requires concentration and is dependent upon just how much water she has access to. At this time, there are real limits on how much she can manipulate at a time, even in a large body of water, and this is one of the things she is trying to study most as a potential hero.
COSTUME: ( Reference Image ) - A neoprene wet-suit in grays and purples, Tess favors it because it does not limit her swim speed at all.
SAMPLE:
It had been another hard day at school. Tess was still getting solid enough marks, but she had to admit that even she had never expected it to be this difficult to become a hero. Her natural prowess could only carry her so far, and it was sometimes a little infuriating. But she wasn't the sort to give up, and so she frowned in the locker room mirror and gave her face a few slaps. “Get over it Tess, you'll get the hang of it.”
She walked out into the pool, looking down at the water and grunting in irritation. She hated chlorinated pools. Thankfully her gills could take it, and it wasn't actually toxic, but it just kind of smelled wrong to her whenever she was in the water. However, she couldn't always go to the coast or the lake, now could she? No, she needed to train, and this was the best place. Besides, everything always made so much more sense under water.
A few tentative steps out onto the diving board and she was into the water. Once its coolness surrounded her, the world seemed to fade away. She closed her inky black eyes and sighed, relaxing before her hands moved out and started to push at the water, slipping easily through it. Just what she needed. Any time she was having a bad day, the water always brought her back
